Fyia awoke early the following morning, slipping out of the cabin before Cal awoke, and heading up on deck. Her wolves followed her to the bow, where she looked for her dragon, calling to him with her mind. She was tempted to ride him, but it was too dangerous, even for her. To fall from this height would mean death, and there were no eagles around to save her; they were all too afraid of the dragons.

‘Good morning, Your Majesty,’ said a voice from the next-door airship, her words faint, the wind whipping them away.

‘Good morning, Essa,’ said Fyia. Her friend’s formal address was both appropriate and irritating. When Sensis or Edu used her title, they did it out of respect, but underneath the formality was a bond of friendship that had withstood the test of time. It had once been like that with Essa, until she and Veau had lied to her. Sure, they’d been trying to help, but still …

‘We should build a new system,’ said Essa, neglecting small talk in her usual way.

‘A new system?’

‘To replace the magma ducts. There has to be a better way; a safer way.’

‘Maybe,’ said Fyia, pondering the idea—the enormity, or maybe audacity of it, ‘although we have several other hurdles to jump first.’

‘It suddenly makes sense though …’

Fyia waited patiently for her to continue, well acquainted with Essa’s seemingly erratic ways.

‘Towns in illogical places that once were prosperous, but have fallen to ruin, because they no longer have a use. But they are important to the ducts. We should look into that … seek to understand. They are placed at joins in the system. I think they have taps …’

‘Essa, I can’t say I’m following,’ said Fyia, but Antice distracted them as he jumped the railing onto Essa’s ship.

‘Good morning, Your Majesty,’ said Antice, bowing low.

‘Lord Antice,’ said Fyia, with a brief nod.

‘Are you going to ride your dragon?’ he asked, as though the question had been burning a hole in his throat.

Fyia gave him an incredulous look at his abrupt tone. ‘I should think so, as long as he seems amenable to the idea.’

‘Have you asked him yet?’

‘Asked him?’

‘If he’s amenable?’

‘How would I do that?’

Antice frowned. ‘Mind to mind … how you communicate with your Cruaxee.’

Fyia paused, thinking through her reply, because it occurred to her that Antice could be mining for information. ‘It is not that simple,’ she said. ‘That is not how a Cruaxee bond works, and my connection with my dragon is even less straightforward.’

‘How so?’

‘Why do you care?’

Antice ran a hand through his short, curly hair, looking suddenly sheepish. It was shocking; the Antice Fyia knew never looked anything but poised and polished.

‘Because right now we’re the only two people in the known world with dragons,’ said Antice.

‘Assuming the other dragons haven’t found …’

‘Yes, of course, but we’re the only two here, and I thought … well, I thought maybe we could work together; compare notes.’

Fyia watched him for several beats, then averted her gaze, noticing that at some point Essa had slipped away.
